I have always had an impression that an average salary for teachers in the USA is not low, that teachers belong to the middle class considering their salary as well, and I believe no one in Russia or the UK for instance could expect teachers to supply their pupils with the stuff required. At least I have never heard of it here. As for the salary and my amazement - in comparison: in the UK a newly qualified teacher earns a minimum of £21,000 a year but the scale starts high up based on experience and skills. An average salary for teachers is £30,000-40,000 a year. It’s not so bad! As an example to show what it means: once we were invited for dinner by my husband’s friend. The friend and his wife are a young couple under 30. Danny has a small garage (a workshop for repairing cars) and Clare is a teacher. I was surprised and fascinated when saw their house: fully new, nicely furnished, a tiled terrace with a marble balustrade leads to a beautiful garden (not very large), a nice living room and comfortable dining room …. So they could afford it, and I supposed that the same situation is in the USA.
