You are doing great job! As to me, I just speak as I hear basically as I use the same strategy as children. I am not sure if it right or wrong but it is working for me and I am happy. So as I mentioned before, Nataly is your best shot when it comes to rules of language.

As to sentence "Rain cats and dogs", it is saying so if you hear it, it means that it is really raining hard, nothing to do with cats or dogs as you see. As to me, I am aware of some idioms but prefer not to use them a lot. To me saying: "It is raining really hard" is more than enough but it is definetely good to know some of them so you would know what others are talking about.
