elenayork, thanks a lot! Pregnant woman can give a birth absolutely free in Russia too, but those who want perfect conditions, prefer to negotiate a contract

Can they have medical tests free as well (such as ultrasound test and others)? And then do they have obligatory medical insurance or everything is free for any woman? |

I have one word for you - horrible. Nothing is for free, insurance pays some but not everything. The doctors bills are very expensive. I don't know much about seniors medical care - I think they have some deductions. It is a huge business here. Don't let me start. Here are some help to the poor but not to the middle class. o, thanks , I hope, it will come some day
it isn't necessarily, you may have medical care absolutely free, but if you want good care you should pay. Nowadays, almost every pregnant woman have to pay, because there is nobody who want to get some bad result.
yes it is, these procedures are free for everybody, but there are lots of doctors, who do such free tests not very well, unfortunately |

Olya, and what do ordinary people do if it happens that someone falls ill and they are not rich, but there is need to have treatment in the hospital? Or in a case if an urgent help is required or there is a terrible toothache? If a family is on benefit can they afford to have medical insurance? If not what shall they do?
ESENICHKA
I left Russia in April 2007, and at that time even an ambulance asked you about your insurance. You could have free urgent help but because it’s urgent. At that time if you were not a pregnant woman but needed an ultrasound test you should pay for it (though I had my insurance). I wish the situation would change for the best. As for National Health Service in England (Russian analogue – система здравоохранения) there are a lot of problems as well, and with a new Tory Government it seems we will be even worse off. |

usually they don't go to the doc. Sounds horrible but happens a lot. Hospitals are very expensive and usually they kick you out ASAP sometime in the same day of surgery (in my case). Which is good otherwise you are gonna be broke.
Like I said - "Here are some help to the poor but not to the middle class." So, if a family on the benefits they probably have some excess to the cheap medical help, but you can imaging that it is just a minimum. That's why Obama wanted to change the health insurance system , so, everybody can have insurance. I don't want to mislead you a lot simply because I don't have all information. I only write on from my own experience. |

I see.
If it’s a huge business as you say, then it is doubtful that Obama will be able to change anything. It’s like mafia, I believe. May be the word is too strong, I apologize then. |

absolutely agree. Medical insurance is like business, there are lots of money, and that's why i think that it's impossible to break this system down |

- nothing to apology for. You got it right!
no comments... . That's how most people feel about it. However, think about some poor kid, who thanks to your $ 67 will be able to get the medical help and maybe, maybe it would help to safe his life. Insurance cost is horrible (I am upset about it, too) but it is another issue. I am not telling that everything done right and I definitely don't want to get into political debate here. |

Dear girls,
in connection with the subject we discussed before and some words about the customs in different countries
Last year, just before Christmas, we were in the surgery. (In England "surgery" is the word for what we call policlinic in Russia, I don’t know the word used for it in the USA). In the reception I saw an old lady who asked a receptionist to give her best Christmas wishes to doctor D. and in addition to it there was a Christmas card and something wrapped in a bright Christmas foil (possibly it was a box of chocolate sweets) It was for the first time I saw something of this kind here and I was inspired! It reminded me about Russia in some respect. At home I told My Darling that I would like to give a small Christmas gift to our doctor (a box of chocolate sweets and a Christmas card as well). You know in Russia it is a usual thing - a small gift to your doctor (sometimes it is not small, but on the contrary ) to express your gratefulness. But if you could see my husband’s face when he heard about my plans! He was shocked! He said that he would never do it and didn’t advice me to do it! On my question “why?” he replied that in this case we pretended to be treated like special patients and it’s not good!!
I thought it over: may be he was right, and what old ladies can do, (could be taken very indulgently) and not inadmissible for all the rest. At least I can’t imagine it being a pleasant surprise on the face of our doctor. |

elenayork, how interesting! We are really used to this sort of relations - to give some simple gifts to doctors, teachers, nurses, kindergarten teachers and so on. |

I know about it perfectly well! That’s why I was surprised to learn about the customs in connection with it here – in the UK. The same – there are no gifts, when children finish school etc. I remember 3 years ago when my grandson finished primary school they had a party somewhere , I don’t remember if it was in school or may be in the cafe but not a word was said about a gift to the teacher. So I asked my stepdaughter Anna if the parents gathered money to buy a gift for their children’s teacher. She looked surprised and even puzzled , and then answered negatively. She had never heard about something of this kind. |

Sorry to say but I know that some teachers believe that because they work so hard giving a part of their soul to their pupils, because teaching is a hard and complicated occupation and because their wage is not very high they have deserved expensive gifts from parents (I am speaking about some teachers in Russia and I heard about it from them). And now there is a system of taking money from parents to thank teachers (even in kindergartens). I think it’s a rotten practice and system . Teachers and doctors deserve good wages but not gifts from parents and patients I believe . |

oh, my dear, you are so right and so wrong. I know the teachers (public schools) here, they have to buy some classroom supplies(like pencils, notebooks, books and cetera) on their own money, and their salaries are , indeed, so low. I don't mentioned how hard their job is and how important. I think a little appreciation ( if it is coming from the heart) would not hurt anybody.
